Martti Ahtisaari – 2008 Nobel Peace Prize Winner

Martti AhtisaariFormer Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari has won the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee declared Friday. Ex-Finnish president Martii Ahtisaari worked to find a solution in Kosovo. The Peace Prize given to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for alliance between nations, for the elimination or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and encouragement of peace congresses. And Martti Ahtisaari is one of the best choices of this year for his significant efforts, on a number of continents and over more than three decades, to resolve worldwide conflicts.

Ole Danbolt Mjoes, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said “Ahtisaari is an outstanding international mediator, through his untiring efforts and good results, he has shown what role mediation of various kinds can play in the resolution of international conflicts.” First in 1999 and again between 2005 and 2007 Ahtisaari worked twice to find a solution in Kosovo. He also worked with others this year to find a peaceful solution to the problems in Iraq, the committee said. Ahtisaari and also take part to resolving other conflicts in Central Asia, Northern Ireland, and the Horn of Africa. Nobel committee mainly give him this prize for his “significant” part in establishing Namibia’s independence and his “central” role in solving the question of the Indonesian state of Aceh in 2005. Others, in 1989 he Received OR Tambo award for his terrific accomplishment as a diplomat and obligation to the cause of liberty in Africa and peace in the world and in 2008he was winner of the UNESCO Felix Houphouet-Boigny Peace Prize.

Ahtisaari was born in June 23, 1937 Viipuri, Finland. His career is really accomplished. In 1965 he joined the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland in its Bureau for International Development Aid. After that from 1973 to 1977 he was ambassador of Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. It was only a small part of his careers. In his career he was United Nations Commissioner for Namibia, Under-Secretary of State in charge of International Development Cooperation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, Special Representative of the UNTAG (United Nations Transition Assistance Group), UN Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Inspector of the IRA’s arms’ dumps. For his great performance and healthy experience he was elected as a President of Finland in 1994.

He is a perfect nominee for taking the great Nobel peace prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee desires to articulate the hope that others may be enthused by his efforts and his achievements.
