Moscow Wants to Talk with Washington

Both parties take cool breath after a long time as the Russian government has made the Strategic Arms Treaty a top priority for talks with its counter part the US administration. Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov said a new legally binding Russian-American treaty must be signed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. He made this remark recently in a speech to UN members. It is noted that the Strategic Arms Treaty expires in December 2009.

Informing about his government view, Lavrov said Moscow would be prepared to take up American request that it reset its relations with Washington to make dialogue on common interest issues. He stated his belief that Moscow could work with the new Obama administration. He expressed there was something it had found hard to do with the Bush administration. On the other hand, Lavrov reiterated Russia’s concerns to Hillary Clinton last week about basing a missile defense shield in Poland and in the Czech Republic. He said to Hillary his country would have to take counter measures. In the circumstances, the new announcement from Moscow would help to establish tranquility between two powerful countries.
